Popular Wallingford bakery reopens under new owner

WALLINGFORD – Customers can expect to see a new face behind Mr. D’s bakery counter after the previous owners handed over the keys earlier this month.

Former owners Bill and Anne DeFusco opened Mr. D’s in July 2010. The bakery, 50 N. Main St., offers a nostalgic atmosphere with candy in glass jars, personalized cakes and cupcakes for the holidays and birthdays and ice creams.

“I was working next door at the library,” said new owner Heather Williams. “I would stop during my breaks for an ice cream. When COVID arrived, he had been in the game for 10 years at that time and he was considering retiring. ”

Williams has said through numerous conversations that there has been a discussion about his taking over. Although business has stalled due to the pandemic, she officially took over ownership of the Wallingford Bakery on July 1.

Williams is no stranger to the baking industry. She studied baking and pastry making in London and Canada and worked in the restaurant industry for over 24 years.

“I was nervous because he has such a good reputation and such a good following,” Williams said. “I’m still nervous of course. I stuff such big shoes but can’t wait to see what happens. ”

Bill and Anne DeFusco could not be reached for comment.

Mr. D’s was closed Monday and Tuesday for refurbishment of the store. The website is also under maintenance during this period.

While Williams has gone to great lengths to give the store an updated look, customers can still expect the same recipes and name for now.

“For the first year, I’m going to keep everything pretty much the same,” she said. “Maybe I’ll tweak some of the recipes a bit. It will always be the same, just with my touch on it. ”

Williams said she is planning an event to introduce herself to the community as the new owner in August. She said she was excited to learn more about the “great” community of Wallingford.

“I think this will be a great new challenge for her,” said Alphonso Rikard, chef of the Library Wine Bar and Bistro. “When she worked here she was very energetic and had a lot of character and she was very family oriented. I think it will be fine. ”

Mr. D’s hours remain from Sunday to Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
